When we learn the artifisial light using studio light, The basic potrait it's one technic we should learn. As a Potrait, we try to explore caracter from the subject. How to explore it, we could made caracter from face, body gesture and emotion.
This basic portrait, used dark background, with it call low key techic. With this we create light and shadow. Control lighting in selecting area, we can used one light, two, or in some condition we could use more than three light.

Technique
This is the lighting diagram, step by step we try to know, lighting effect to the subject, this step 1, we could trying to make a counture light from backlight, in this photo i used soft box.

In step two, i turned off soft box in the back and turn on the main light, side light with standart reflector and honeycomb. Than we know the effect with using only one main light from the side.

This is final result, turn on two light, we used in step one and step two, for optional we could used white reflector in the left side for control shadow in the left side of his face.

Know we could make it, than trying with other subject. after know the position of lighting, we could improve with learning gesture. But remember lighting position always adjusting depend on situation, talent body, and the activity of the subject.

With same logical from this technique, we could change this mono block lighting with stobist using portable flash like Matz, Nikon SB, or Canon Speedlight.
All this photo take using Nikon D7000 with basic lens 18-105mm and Nikon D200 with 24-85mm.
